The roots of soapmaking in Aleppo

The other day I clicked over to the Mission Peak Soap site to order some oils. And there on the home page was a link that owner David Critchfield called an “absolutely great article on the ancient art of soapmaking in the Middle East.” I have to agree.

“Soaping Up” is about soapmaking in Aleppo, the largest city in Syria. It’s believed that the soapmaking process originated in this area and moved to west to Europe after the first crusades.

When you have some time, enjoy this article and meet some of the families that are still making soap in the traditional way, along with those that are forced to change with the times.

The article includes some great photos. Check out the towers of soap!
