Ever notice the pretty colors and swirls on the surface of soap bubbles? Well, scientists are studying those little swirls (“vortices” for those looking to expand their vocab) to better understand the really big swirls that make up cyclones and hurricanes on Earth. If they can figure out how they work on a tiny scale, they hope to understand (and better predict) how they work in our atmosphere.
Pretty cool stuff from our little soap bubbles.
This article in New Scientist explains a little more. Want to read the published paper? Here you go…
I had never made that connection before – but now that’s all I see when I pull out my bubbles next (and YES, I own bubbles. No judging allowed).
Blow on! No judgment here. 🙂
That is a really hypnotic video!
Indeed!
Wow, that’s really cool (and pretty)! How interesting that soap bubbles may help us to better understand hurricanes and cyclones!
